BEHAVIOR
Ants are very aggressive, especially soldiers. They are very protective to reperoductives and the mother queen. When colony is young, workers forage for food in 100s to 200s. When large soldiers appear, large soldiers accompany workers to forage and they conduct swarm raids throughout the day. These ants are like army ants and they move from place to place, after consuming all the resources in an area. When there is excess food, the ants cover the food with dirt, leaves or anything that they can find so as to prevent other ants from taking away their food. The ants constantly make new chambers to store excess food, brood and winged adults. The ants also cover their foraging trails with dirt for protection. When they move from one place to another, all the brood and unconsumed is brought to the new location first. Once everything has been transported over, the queen, escorted by about 20 super majors, tones of workers and minor soldiers, moves quickly to the new location. Sometimes, walls of soil are built from the old location to the new location for protection
NUPITAL FLIGHTS AND COLONY FOUNDING
The ants carry out nuptial flight once every two or three months, each consisting of about 500-1000 winged adults. Before nuptial flights, workers expand nest entrances and winged ants gather around the entrance and are heavily protected by large soldiers. Nest activity is very high at this time. Unlike Camponotus ants, they take off directly from the ground; but occasianaly climb up the trunk of a tree to take off. Winged adults take off and land on a bright or place to mate. They are attracted to bright and shiny surfaces like light reflected on water. Mating occurs on the ground and up to 5 males can mate with a queen at the same time. Queens break off their wings immediately after mating and look for a suitable spot to start the colony. Queen’s wings are littered all over the place after a nuptial flight. The queen digs about 5 inches into the ground and lays about 20 eggs. Eggs hatch within 1 week and are fed with the queen’s saliva. After about 1 month, the first batch of workers will hatch and the queen will lay another 50 eggs or so. The first batch of workers only care for the brood, expand the nest and groom the queen. Only after the second batch of workers hatch, an entrance will be opened and the ants will start foraging. From here, the queen restricts herself to auto-grooming and laying eggs only.

The ants forage in long columns consisting of thousand of workers. Soldiers are situated at several points of the columns for protection. Eats almost everything - Flies, slugs, snails, grasshoppers, crickets, mealworms, sausages, cakes, greasy things (favorite), brood of other ants, dead spiders, seeds and other species of queens ect. Ants have enormous diets, somewhat seems ridiculous. Ants usually forage at mid afternoon or late ant night daily. However, ants seldom eat dead mates of ants of their kind.
NESTING
Nests can spread up to 200 m2 and consists of 2-3 gigantic chambers and many other tiny chambers. The queen’s chamber is usually located near the surface to receive heat. The main chambers are brood chamber, queen chamber, food storage chamber and a large “hall” where soldiers, workers and reperoductives move about. The structure of the nests varies from dome-shaped nest to a single tube with several side chambers. The nests don’t usually go very deep are usually located beside large trees.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- i forgot to add that Pheidologeton can only survive in dirt nests with quite some bit of moisture. these ants will die overnight without water/moisture.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------- fter almost a whole year's wait, this night has finally arrived. This afternoon, there was a really heavy downpour and very strong winds. After the rain cleared, I noticed many supermajors guarding outside the nest entrances. There were also thousands of workers pouring out to expand the nest entrances. At 5:30pm, I could count 87 supermajors stationed all over the nest. At 5:45, the first drones surfaced. Then came another and another. Some of them went back into the nests. At around 6:50pm, the first queen surfaced. By then about 50 drones had surfaced and the soldiers were trying the push the drones back into the nest (probably too early?) At 7:10, it was getting rather dark and I lited the place. Within seconds, some 500+ drones and queens came rushing of all the nest entrances and they took off. MARVELLOUS SIGHT IT WAS! Due to a lack of containers, I only managed to collect 54 queens of which 38 have mated now. Now my whole yard is filled with those little buzzers. This should be a more accurate account of the Pheidologeton nupital ceremony as the previous round were completely indoors and the colony was smaller then. Hope you enjoed my narration 结束 | 最初发表时间:2006-7-17 | | 古生代=Z的革命 欢迎来我的博客:http://queen-ant.blog.sohu.com/ 不断完善ing |
